My sister is making me a purse out of some old scraps of leather left over from a native arts course we took in school years ago. I made a really hideous, borderline offensive “jacket” and shes salvaging the few good parts from it. I used a wood and leather burning kit to draw a bear on the back which she has used as the front flap of the purse. Shes doing a bloody incredible job and I CANT WAIT TIL ITS DONE! But shes a woman obsessed, from when she gets up to way, way after she should have gone to bed shes sewing away. Pushing needle through skin, sewing it tight and strong with long threads of black sinew. This purse is going to last forever. Its so tough. I’m very excited.
Here it is, in sections. Ivory and natural deer skin, a pocket for my pens and a pocket for my cellphone. Big brass rings to hold the strap.
Working away. A cup of tea and Corrie Street on TV.
Me screwing about with the leather burner.
My bear, in a fancy hat!
Digging through my Nan’s shoebox of thread. It still smelled like her house.
