This is a box of mixed fruit I got at the fruit & veg shop today. Turns out it was just peaches and pears inside! So I cut’em up and chucked them in the crock pot (cannot stop typing cock pot, every single time, damn it, FOCUS) and in 8.. or.. 10.. hours, Ill have peach & pear sauce to eat all up! You can also do this in about an hour and a half on the stove, but you have to babysit it, and meh.. Im too lazy for that, it’s Sunday. So here ya go, for three bucks and about 10 minutes of prep Ive got 3 litres of soft, peachy, peary niceness to spread all over things and pour straight into my mouth. Burning me horribly. I’ll wait til its cool.
** Update: This was originally going to be a peach & pear butter… but after 12+ hours in the crock, it was just a nice applesauce consistency. I think for a pear butter consistency, I’ll need the heat. I poured the lot through a mesh strainer, reserved the more pulpy bit to throw on yoghurt in the morning and will do a post on making it into proper butter! I think 25 minutes in a pot will beat the 12 hours it took a crock pot to cook it, not worth the energy. Was worth a try though!
Crock Pot Peach & Pear Sauce
Yield: 3 litres
Time: 10 mins Prep, 8 hours cooking
Price: $1.00 per litre
1 cup water
1 lemon, juiced
2 cups brown sugar
2 tsp salt
Optional: Vanilla, fresh grated ginger, or cardamom
Peel and roughly chop all the fruit. Throw into crock pot with lemon juice and water. Let cook on highest setting for 2-3 hours.
When the fruit has softened, stir in the brown sugar, salt and any flavours you wish to add. Puree with in a blender or with an immersion blender until smooth. Cook for another 4-5 hours on high (or overnight on low)
