Donk the Honks with Bonks of Honky, Honky-Honky Honk Honk-Honk, Honk-Honk, Honk, Honk

It was my favourite kind of winter day out. When the air is just cold enough for a light bit of snow, blanketing the trees and making the air so still and quiet. There was supposed to be a snow storm today, or as CB’s Nan would put it, we were supposed to “get some dirt.” The snow is starting up now, but this afternoon all we saw was some dainty snowflakes flitting about. The weather so mild I wandered around in my t-shirt to take some pictures.

The house looked very cute when I went trudging out to throw some food out for the fox so I came back out again with the camera.

Checked in on the old cast iron tub out back of Joan’s house. It was tempting to crawl into that big fluffy pile of snow. It hasn’t felt like Christmas to me yet, but it did this afternoon taking pictures, everything all red, white and green.

Last of the lonely golden apples gathering snow on the tree.

One of my favourite things to see every day when I come home from work, CB’s wood pile. Makes me feel warm just looking at it.

Hey! Im back! Havent been very bloggy this summer, but as wordpress reminded me a bit ago, its been almost 10 years of me writing dumb crap on the internet so I’m able to forgive myself for the odd temporary absence. Absence makes ones farts grow fonder anyway. However, I know that the internet demands sacrifices in the form of pictures of dogs and flowers in order for the Web Gods to continue smiling upon us so I will suck it up and do my part.

So here is a dog:

Here are some flowers:

Here is a dog with flowers:

That would be Sweetpea, a big beautiful wild rose, an ant crawling on a peony for some unknown purpose, and finally Sweetpea again. She is posing artistically with Foxgloves and looking a bit nervous about a spider.

Im sorry if these pictures have been blogged about before, I had them uploaded in old drafts and I cant be bothered to check up and see if Ive ever actually shown them to you before.

I may as well post the rest of the pictures from the old drafts, they sum up our summer in Gabarus pretty nicely!

This summer I finally got my motorcycle licence! This was taken on our first ride together to the beach, which has been a one of our shared life goals for ages now. Romance! I took a two day course, and flipped the bike twice, but got right back on. By the end of the two days I could barely move my legs and my knees were held together mostly with Band-Aids but I was very proud of myself. Mine is the old BMW and its so sexy and her name is Zerhilde. It means warrior goddess in German, whatever…

I spent almost every day after work this summer swimming in the ocean. It was absolutely, balls-clenchingly cold, but it felt so fresh and nice. A couple of nights a seal swam with me, but pretty far away. It was still magical as fuck.

This summer we ate some amazing meals together. Lobster, mackerel and cod fish suppers at the churches and community galls around the area.  A sushi place opened up here and made me so happy. I crave me some fish eggs and eel on rice so bad. We also cooked a lot of nice meals for each other, lovely big leisurely breakfast, lots of curries, Chinese pork dumplings & salty cucumber, thai dishes, etc.

Midnight ice cream snacks in bed..

Gorged on fresh strawberries and blueberries.

I made an absolute buttload of blueberry jam and experimented with making rose sugar and angelica liqueurs.

img_20160917_132128

We took a week and drove to Newfoundland to make desserts at an amazing Food Festival there called Roots, Rants & Roars which I should probably do a post about.CB got a rep at the event for being the worlds most patient cook, spending hours standing slowly stirring scrunchions so they didnt burn and frying 700 doughnuts. We made blueberry doughnuts, screech n’ scrunchion doughnuts, and apple fritters with apples from our apple trees.

We got to see some of our old friends from Fogo which was so nice. I miss my Fogo people every day. We got to have a couple of meals with Murray & Judy, and buy a some of Paddy Barry’s photographs which are now on our wall.

We cooked beside Duff Goldman. We had breakfast with CB’s food-crush Zane Caplansky and his super cool wife Willa.

We ate this!

img_20160826_121507

I made this cool cake! Most proud of this one.

I chopped off my hair. Buzzed one side and dyed it purple.

We went for numerous long drives and talked about life and the world and everything in it.

We went for hikes through the woods, taking pictures of mushrooms and frogs.

Hung out with Sweetpea, who is quite possibly The Best.

Oh yeah, and we started a business! More on that to come…

Anyway Im tired and this is so many pictures so, so long for now!

Wild Berry Princess

Good evening, CHUMPS!

I kid, you’re not chumps. You’re ok in my book, pals! You’re a squirt of A1 sauce on the medium rare steak of my life! Im pretty tired… and we had steak for dinner, so.. topical..

uHMmmm.. so yeah. Stuff.. Yeah.. Well, Ive been taking the dog for lots of walks. Sometimes on these walks I see cool things and stop to take mostly-blurry pictures of them with my phone while Sweet Pea impatiently stomps her feed beside me and/or pees on the thing Im trying to photograph…

IMG_20160630_194607

No pee on these! Just rainy dew drops! Some pretty little wild strawberries. They were so brightly coloured that my phone had a hard time registering the berry.

WILD BERRY!! *guitar solo*

IMG_20160630_194640

So. Cute. AND delicious. Sweet and sour, like a tiny little strawberry punch in the tongue. Sweet Peas favourite food is, well, dog food, but her second favourite food is strawberries. When I buy them she is allowed one special perfect berry, which she covets. Its not that Im greedy and dont want to share, its just that more than one and she gets Surprise Strawberry Squirts in the hallway. SO, when we found strawberries just laying on the ground her little doggy mind was blown.

IMG_20160630_200149

Look at these nice irises. These are wild Irises called Blue Flags, and they grow all over the East Coast. They are complex and brightly coloured and seem like they are dressed way too fancy for the dinner party with the rest of the weeds.

IMG_20160620_204056

Lupins in the warm glow of a sunset is my preferred view of life. If I could just paste this picture to the inside of my eyelids and see it whenever I blinked.

OH I FORGOT TO TELL YOU. Last week, I was walking by the pond here, by these lupins but on the other side, and there was a loon swimming around. And then, a bald eagle took off from the shore beside it, sailed over the loon, over me, and to the ocean. It was the most majestic thing I have ever witnessed.

+5 Majesty Points

Sometimes instead of turning left out of our driveway for our walk, Sweet Pea go CRAZY and turn right to walk down to the little beach. One time Sweet Pea pooped on the beach and I picked it up into the biodegradable doggy poop bags I bought. But holding a bag of hot poop was hampering my artistic style while trying to take inspiring shots of the ocean, so I chucked it into said ocean. I was like.. its biodegradable, it will just disintegrate, its not really littering. But then it just bobbed around there on the surface of the water. It was just me, and Sweet Pea, and an accusatory bag of poop alone on the beach at sunset. And I felt like the worst human garbage. My 7 year old self, who was a member of the Environment Team anti-littering squad at my elementary school, was shocked and appalled. Wow, that feels good to get off my chest. Why is my 7 year old self being so judgemental anyway, I know what she did with all those boogers when she thought no one was looking. YOU’RE NOT BETTER THAN ME, INNOCENT CHILD SELF!

IMG_20160618_211221

Anyway, check this out. Kinda pleasent, no? Very pretty. Much nice. Totally worth ruining the ocean for.

IMG_20160618_211214

This is Sweet Pea refusing to smile for the camera. She is the worst model.

IMG_20160620_203907

So it’s Canada Day long weekend! Usually that means nothing to me because we always just work. Work work. Work. But not so much work now! Well, we worked, but AFTER work we had enough chutzpah left to drive out to the beach in the dark of night and light off some fireworks!! My budget was $50, which got me 6 fireworks. One was called Purple Passion and had kisses all over the dynamite tube. We planted them in the sand and one at a time fired them off into one, giant flowering explosion. It lasted about 45 seconds, but it was a wonderful 45 seconds. Sometimes thats all you need, is just a few minutes in a week to do the one thing you want to do. It was beautiful. Then we drove home and I made midnight chili cheese hotdogs. YEEEAHHH!

I take it back, she is a *Super Model*

Joony Blumes

Hi there ho there

Maybe I need to change the reason behind this blog. It has existed primarily so that my family can see what Im up to while Im busy working. So that my mom knows that Im alive, mostly. But now, I am not working so much, and I have the ridiculous luxury of being able to call my Darling Fam every damn day if I want. And by dandy, I DO! Now that means they already know all the junk Im doing. Which means, I have no blog material! EEE!

It will have to go back to being a selfish blog again I suppose, just serving as record for myself. I like looking back through time to a random date and seeing where in the world we were and what we were eating there.

IMG_20160603_191752

Its been foggy butt-shit weather out for the last week or so, providing us with copious amounts of wet laundry but zero pretty sunshine pictures. One day last week after work Sweet Pea and I took a walk through the woods and I took some pictures of weeds for fun.

IMG_20160603_190520

Can’t leave home without my trusty coyote-smashing stick! SMASH MASH!

IMG_20160603_190249

All kinds of creepy pale horror-movie Swamp Thing looking ferns coming up in the bog. Looks like something a dinosaur would munch on or something.

IMG_20160603_191150

Scary but Beautiful looking pitcher plant gargling some swamp sweat, waiting for dinner.

Just through the patch of forest you come out onto the barrens. This is a flat, loamy area with some short shrubbery and whatnot. Lots of interesting plants growing here. Juniper, spruce, labrador tea, caribou moss, lily-of-the-valley, blueberries in blossom. And those little fluffball looking flowers. Cute.

I was having a fine time crawling around in the mud taking pictures while SweetPea zoomed all around me panting like a maniac. Then I heard this strange sound, like a cellphone vibrating. “Thats odd,” I said aloud to nobody but a blueberry bush. “…” said the bush back. I took another couple of pictures before the odd sound turned into this low rumbling moan and then I was like.. uhhmmmm… well, its not a bear, or a moose, or a wolf or coyote or some kind of poisonous reptile or murder turtle so Im not very worried. But thought maybe I should head back just in case. I hollered at Sweet Pea to come on now, and she jingled over to me and we headed back to the yard. The sound following us all the way, and my heart was racing, as I got ready to use my coyote smasher on this invisible menace!

IMG_20160603_191850

Safe back at home. I took this picture of a flowering tree in front of Joan’s house that looked kinda nice. Later when CB got home from the diner I told him about the weird sound. He said right away that it must have been a bobcat! Cool. Later on that night Sweet Pea had the cat, Chrissy, trapped under the layzboy and you know what.. that cat made the exact same sound! Only smaller. Totally rad.

IMG_20160603_205746

Sweet Pea and me having tea on the front porch waiting for CB to get home. After our walk in the woods Sweet Pea still had too much energy and ran away on me. I tracked her down in the car, kidnapped her off the street and drove her down to Gull Cove Road. There I opened up the door and kicked her out. I drove to the end of the road with her racing after me. The old girl went about 30km/hr the whole way! Good way to tire her out some.

Forget-me-nots and narcissus flowering in the garden. Those narcissus are over 60 years old.

IMG_20160610_195657

Picked some flowers for the table.

IMG_20160610_195644

Nan made fish cakes for dinner. On toasty bread with chow and a cuppa tea. So niiiiicccceeeee…

Alright thats enough for now, time for sleeping.

G’night Kara From The Future, hope everythings going well and you didnt peak eating fishcakes and picking tulips xoxoxox

Bog Tromp

Saturday. Rainy day. Its about 7 degrees, but just pissing down. Even the ducks are like “ew, gross, dude, like, quack, totally.” Yesterday it rained on us so hard on our drive home we thought we were being pranked. There must be some dastardly ne’er-do-well on the roof of the car hosing us down with a pressure washer. During the evening we sat at the kitchen table reading about nerd stuff and watching it rain horizontally. We didn’t have dinner because we were waiting for ribs to hurry up and finish becoming ribs in the oven. So we went to bed and came back down later to have…….

MIDNIGHT

RIBS!

Bold, italic, underline. Exclamation mark. Fact: ribs at midnight just taste better. Probably because you’re fucking starving, but I think the novelty of eating such an impractical food so impractically late also adds to the flavour. We sat down with some pop, and two dish towels as napkins. Class. I made the rib-rub so spicy though, if you stopped eating for even a second your tongue burst into flame, so you just had to always be eating a rib. Problemo, solvidos.

OH! We bought a BBQ this week! Its so fucking awesome. YEAH YEAH YEAH! It was so, so, cold out out that day but I was so excited, I stopped at Master Meats and got a T-Bone, some sirloin steaks, some bone-in pork chops, and ribs and buns and A1 sauce and then raced home. CB ‘Q’d us up a feast. Now that I’m all old and my brain is getting soft like Jell-o, sometimes I do things in my life and I think “Oh, thats probably how my Dad felt doing this.” And I feel a deeper connection to my SUPER old parents. Ya know, like getting off work being excited to pick up some nice steaks for the BBQ for family dinner. Or when I have an especially hard day at work and stop by the convenience store on the way home for pop and chips and chocolate bars to bring home to eat while watching a terrible action movie. Always I have a near constant desire to buy fireworks, which I think is also from my Dad…

So anyway, our new purpose in life these days is tiring out Sweet Pea so she doesn’t eat our stuff and then shit it back out onto the kitchen floor. She’s temperamental like that. So she must be either walking, or exhausted from walking. Which means, we spend a lot of time lately out in the rain. I made the executive decision this morning to walk back into the woods on the property under the false assumption that the trees would offer us some coverage from the rain. I forgot that mostly the rain is on the ground… on our feet.. into our boots. Its okay though, it was a lot of fun! I had CB, CB had a big stick, and we had a dog. Life is great! Sweet Pea was in full-on dog mode, racing around, smelling smelly smells, peeing on stuff, splashing around in ponds, peeing on more stuff. It was great.

IMG_20160409_111617

Here she is, being a wild huntress. Huntin’ some bog turtles for supper. Oh my god, do you think there might be turtles in there!? I never thought. Mental note: in the summer, go look for turtles in there.

So this is the woods behind our woods, its mostly just moss and marsh and boggy bits, rotten trees, that sort of thing. I did however finally stumble across something I have been keeping an eye out for: Labrador Tea! Like from Newfoundland! Up until now its all just been its poisonous twin brother, Bog Myrtle. But this was the real, fuzzy bottomed, deal. It was like coming across an old friend. So I’ll have to pick some!

(April, if you’re reading this, I’m meaning to send you some for tea!)

IMG_20160409_112753

So pretty. Everything smelled like old wet wood and clean rain. So nice. I was diggin’ it.

There’s a little brook-ish kind of dealy on the very ass end of our yard. Its covered by 25 foot trees, and has an ancient broken down shed in a pile beside it. There’s a bunch of old garbage left here, from back in the day where you’d just chuck your old broken shit in the woods. There’s an old manual wash tub, evidence of an old wood cooking stove, and lots of cool old bottles. I took a few nice looking ones back in the house.I’ll clean out the moss and use them for decorating. MARTHA FUCKING STEWART STYLE.

Look at whats growing inside this old broken milk bottle! Its like a little natural terrarium. The plants get water through the broken hole in the bottom and the bottle acts as a little green house. CUTE.

IMG_20160409_111627

Its about 2pm now, that time of day where Nap Feelings start to kick in, so I may just go partake. GOODBYE NOW!
