Windowledge

img_20160910_182026

Ive spent most of the afternoon writing blogs and eating strange snacks. It feels nice to indulge in 2 of my favourite hobbies. Snacks & blogs. Slaps & bongs. Baps & snogs. In a few minutes Ill get up and feed Sweetpea, who has finished napping and is now staring at me very intensely from the couch across the room. Trying to will me out of this recliner with the pure devastating force of her doggy mind. Then we will go for a walk, and she will get to pee on flowers, which always puts her in a very good mood. Its very grey, foggy and a bit rainy out but its nice and warm. Despite that I have a fire on because its nice. Its probably about 30 degrees in here, but whatever! I love combusting trees!

ANYWAY. Early this afternoon I wandered around the house taking pictures of random things. I havent done that in forever. So I thought Id put the pictures up, even though they are pretty boring, its a nice little time capsule of October 2016.

img_3091

Nothing feels more like home to me then a pineapple slowly rotting away on a windowsill. Its been a decorative feature of nearly every place we have lived. I like to imagine they are staring wistfully out onto the cold day outside and remembering the tropical island they were plucked from. Thinking about their mom pineapple, and the pina colada they will never become. Sorry pineapples, its your fault for being so delicious.

img_3093

These are my fancy wines I bought for cooking. And drinking apparently. Mostly drinking *burp*

Just wanted to show them off so you know factually what a fancy bitch I am. I shouldnt drink wine because it gives me The Sads and makes me cry over cereal commercials. But c’est le vie. J’ai soif. Wuh huh huh… (thats French for laughter, like the cook in The Little Mermaid, you know?)

GREEN THUMB ALERT! That plant there is called a goldfish plant or a dolphin plant or something. Whatever, its pretty cool looking and pretty happy on the kitchen windowsill. I shared a bit of wine with it so its drunk now and growing all over the fucking place.

Beside it is my nans old kitchen timer, one of my most precious objects, and a glass full of ivy seedlings. I have 5 ivy plants now. Does anyone want an ivy ??

img_3119

I dont know why I am so fascinated with documenting the inside of my fridge but I am, so there. Here we have all the food groups represented, sweet potatoes, eggs, mayonnaise. I keep my green onions in a jar of water because that way they last 2 weeks instead of 2 days. 79cents a bunch is no joke people, Im not messing around, having those suckers get all dry on me. I save the root and plant it in the pot with my ivy plant, so then I have ivy and green onions shooting up all over and it makes no visual sense but is handy. We stretch 79 cents in this house, damn it!

There’s my soup stock that I should be making into onion soup right now, but I became lazy after wine. Oh and I made cranberry juice by boiling cranberries in sugary water. Its good. The door: 1/2 a lime, yeast, 389719723 jars of half eaten jam, 3 kinds of hot sauce, and donair sauce for squirting on pizza.

img_3117

Holy Mackerel! Photo by Paddy Barry,  hanging in a place of sunny yellow prestige.

img_3120

This salty old chap reflecting the windows in the kitchen.

img_3105

Upstairs this guy is hanging over the terrrlitt in our Salle Du Bain, its a dad running upstairs in the night to pee. CB says he had like a family trailing behind him at one point but they are all gone now. LOL. This wine is making me so fucking morose lololol.

img_3104

Ummmm.. I took this while peeing, because the light was hitting that old pitcher nicely. Sorry.. Probably shouldnt have typed that. Oh well, too late now, absolutely nothing I can do. Once something is typed on the internet it can never be backspaced.

img_3097

This owl is cute.

img_3102

This is a pink verigated I saved from a clearance rack in walmart. Who puts a living thing on a clearance rack! Sick, people. Sick. Shes doing hella good up in the bathroom.

img_3101

This is a wall in our bedroom. Those are postcards from our friends, some antlers CB’s poppy had mounted, and a ton of old books. Closet doors are too expensive so this was my solution, to hang curtains. Eat your heart out, Martha Stewart.

img_20161012_175149

Pineapple lights, light up my life…

img_3109_2

This is a lamp that needs a shade, but Im holding out for a funky one, in front of a painting of the one eyed kitten I did in highschool, and a postcard I wrote to my Gram in NZ and never sent. Sorry Gram. Also my strawberry angel man, strumming the tune of my heart.

img_3121

This is the small bathroom downstairs. Its super, super blue. I love it.

img_3126

Some old javex bottles we found in the forest, and treasures from our travels. Shells and coins mostly.

img_3123_2

This mirror is amazing. That is all.

img_3122

This is a… tree? Made out of mussel shells that CB’s Nan Marie bought for me as a present. I think its so beautiful, and I love how it reflects the light in the bathroom.

img_3127

Last picture. Living room window looking out at one of the bigger apple trees, my dried hydrangeas and an aloe plant I got because I burn myself so often at work.

Okay thats all the nonsense I have time for today. Gonna go walk Sweetpea before she just packs up and leaves. See ya!

Buds & Beer

I think it’s the first day of spring? I dunno if it was, but I was feeling it man. We spent the morning having breakfast and being lazy around the house. Then we took CB’s nan out for some lunch at The Bonnie Prince. The food was meh, but the company was nice. Then I bought some SOCKKKS!!! YEAAHH! SOCKS! YAY! WOO! SOCKS!

On the way back home we stopped for gas and ice creams. We took a detour down a dirt road we always talk about going down. We stopped along the road and trespassed onto a gorgeous chunk of property to look out over the ocean and the Gabarus village in the distance.

IMG_2811

Then we came home and played around in the backyard for a while. CB sorted out the shed, and I wandered around taking pictures. We burned out paper garbage, which I always find fun for some reason. I think its all the fire maybe. Anyway I was poking at the fire when I noticed a large feathery friend settle down on a tree along the perimeter of the yard.

IMG_2803

It was an eagle!! There is a very handsome eagle couple who live across the street. They dont usually come over because we feed the crows so they own our yard. They are not to be trifled with. I dont know where the crows were today, maybe recovering from the bag of Cheeseburger Slider chips I gave them, but the eagle snuck over to have a peek at us. Very curious. Did I mention I’m insane about eagles? I an insane about eagles.

IMG_2798

EAGLES!!!!

IMG_2809

Off he goes to the Missus.

IMG_2829

My walk around the yard was mostly this; moss, pinecones, and bits of branches. There is a bunch of oak trees around the house that Blair brought up from acorns.

IMG_2823

This is the house! Its cute, and pinkish.

IMG_2778

This is a really old brick from the old fireplace that Marie found a fox paw print embedded in it. Coooool

IMG_2780

I just like this rusty old lady bug bird feeder.

IMG_2784

So sunny!

IMG_2812

Little yellow well, marking the well!

IMG_2831

CB found a rusty old egg beater, when you press the stick downwards it spins the beater. Cooooool

IMG_2836

And he found this cool Tonka truck in the basement.

IMG_2842

And a copy of The Four Loves by C.S Lewis. Cute.

IMG_2846

I took a picture of the tub in Joan’s garden next door because it’s nice looking.

IMG_2847

The side of Joan’s house

IMG_2849

Peeking over the side of Joans porch. There’s a giant whale bone just chillin’ on a bench on the porch, and a collection of painted beach rocks.

IMG_2857

Joans front door. Kiiiind of looks like a witch lives here, if I didnt know better….

Alright, CB is making some Jerk Pork so Im going to go sort out my spices into jars so I stop dropping packages of spices all over the place and becoming enraged. YAY! Bye!

Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay

IMG_2300

CB and I took a walk down to the end of the Gabarus village before I left for my trip home. There’s snow on the ground now, but I thought I would put these pictures from the walk up because they are still lovely. Everything all grey and gold and green.

I have a bad habit of collecting special specimens on walks, until my pockets are bulging with rocks to breaking point. Im happy to say Im back just taking pictures of the pretty things and then leaving them where they were at when I found them. I’ll break less pockets and find less surprises in the washing machine later on down the road this way.

End of the road, folks.

“Folly On, Folly On”

_MG_2150_2

Yo yo yo

Some coffee, some omelettes, some pretty trees, and some news!

CB and I are going to move to Cape Breton in November!!

This island is one of the most gorgeous places on the entirety of planet Earth, but after two and a half years it’s about time to move on. We will miss so many things, so much. We made some really, really good friends here, who I hope keep me in their life because I want to keep them. In a little box, in the attic, forever. Nice and safe.. nice and safe.. my precious……. But if you know us, you know we suffer from a chronic case of itchy feet. I’m not just talking about the fungus, Im talking about the push for new stuff to see and do. It feels sad, but also really deep down good, to think about the next thing. Exciting! Fresh! Bold New Flavours! This is sounding like a Juicy Fruit commercial..

IMG_2066

Today we got up and made some breakfast, drank copious amounts of coffee, and talked about the future. It was nice. LOOK AT THAT BREAKFAST! Damn. Then we went out for a wee walk. It was chilly, but with no wind and lots of sun so very pleasent. I took pictures of mushrooms, as I do.

_MG_2123

So pretty, the sunshine on the super green moss and blue-white snow. Little mushrooms poking out.

IMG_2078

Crunchy crunchy ice.

IMG_2073

Spikey moss

IMG_2108

Peeking through the trees at the pond

IMG_2076Found this golden mushroom!

IMG_2091

Frosty grass, the pond is covered in thin patterns of ice like glass. CB through rocks on it, and they cracked through like a spoon through creme brulee. So satisfying..

IMG_2101

Pretty red leaves and black berries

IMG_2105

Birchy birches

IMG_2080 IMG_2112

These mushrooms looked so beautiful in the snow

IMG_2126 IMG_2144Ice and yellow leaves
IMG_2143Some snow on the ground, but still leaves on the trees!

Thats the end of the walk. I was going to tell you more about our plans but I think i should probably stop watching this Richard Pryor documentary and get in the shower, get ready for work. Alright alright here I go. SEE YA!

Fungus Hunter

IMG_1915

Today was 100% absolutely gorgeous all day long. And, it was my day off. I was having a very lazy morning. Sitting in my stink sipping tea, just taking it easy. The sun warmed up the house so much that I had to get up and turn the heat off. I thought maybe I should get outside for a bit, get some of that sunshine on me. Take a walk, blow the stink off me. If I sit around too long in my pj’s the malaise sets in and then the whole day has disappeared and all i have to show for it is a rainbow assortment of food stains on my sweat shirt.

IMG_1892

So I got my boots on, put some music in my ear and grabbed the camera. I wandered out towards the pond by our house. Theres a nice patch of woods and theres all kinds of mushrooms growing in there. I have no idea whats what, so Im not interested in picking them. I just like the look of mushrooms. They seem kinda magical. When I was little I used to think fairies lived in them and when you leafed your thumb through their … under frills (?) the fairies would fly out. But now I see that it was just millions of mushroom spores flying out into my wide eyed baby face. Haha, children are dumb.

IMG_1820

So I didnt realize this, but fireweed lets its delicious purple flowers drop off and then explodes into fluff.

IMG_1817

Like cotton ball bird feathers. So strange. This is me, giving the poof a squeeze. As I am known to do.

IMG_1813

Dogberries looking especially pretty against the super blue sky.

IMG_1847

Sunlight on a spider wed = artistic photography!!

IMG_1826

Some chewed up shroom.

IMG_1841

Some chickadees where very interested in what I was doing. I think they were attracted to the sound of the camera.

IMG_1837

They hung out within reach of me for the first  half of my walk, hopping from branch to branch, just keeping tabs. Nosy buggers.

IMG_1950

Rosehips! Time to pick them I suppose. Make some jelly and tea.

IMG_1904_2

Little mushroom looks like it was dusted with cocoa powder. Tiramisu mushroom. Tiramishroom.

IMG_1829

My favourite colour green!

IMG_1831

I can identify two mushrooms with certainty, chanterelle and hedgehog mushrooms. I have no idea what any of these mushrooms are at all, but mostly they didn’t look delicious anyway. I call this one.. Curly Butts Mushroom

IMG_1947

Shiny charcoal log covered in emerald moss.

IMG_1945

Pretty sure this is a crackerberry plant, but.. usually the leaves are green and the berries are red.. so this is weird..

IMG_1941

The aptly named, blue bead orchid

IMG_1925

Peeking through the moss

IMG_1899

These mushrooms look like pancakes. I dub thee, Pancake Mushrooms

IMG_1897
IMG_1893

Look up! Look waaaay up! Yeah theres nothing there. Made ya look.

IMG_1883

Sunny trees lookin all pretty n’ chit

IMG_1878

Little red capped mushroom. I dub thee.. Little Red Riding Hood Fungus

IMG_1873

Some kind of berry? Tasted like.. dry… and .. numb…

IMG_1853

Path out to the pond

IMG_1856

Thats all blueberries!

IMG_1861

I sat down here for a while and listened to some Johnny Cash. It was nice. Wish I had brought a snack.

IMG_1867

The water was sparkly

IMG_1870

And the colour of beer bottles

IMG_1934

Upscale fairy condominiums.

IMG_1830

Leafs and stuff

IMG_1822

Some dogberries, whatever

IMG_1943

And thats the end of my walk.

Work is just now starting to ease off a bit. Hopefully I will have time to blog more. I miss it. It almost feels lonely, without an outlet for my ramblings and pictures of flowers. This weekend CB and I took a trip down to Bona Vista and did an event there called Roots, Rants & Roars. It was super, super fun and it is so crazy beautiful there. We ate.. everything. One morning, I ordered two breakfasts!!!! I didnt take many pictures but maybe I can dig them up.

Now Im going to have a cup of tea and watch The Rescuers, because that is a great movie. Goodnight!

What’s In Your Fridge?

IMG_6835

My family can tell you, I’ve always had a thing about fridges. CB will tell you it verges on mental illness, but that’s another story. My dad used to say that for me “home is where the fridge is.” Ya know, like the fridge replaces the heart. I just am happiest when my fridge is clean, and full of fresh food is all! My fridge is nearly a direct reflection of my soul. If it’s empty and dirty, I feel empty and dirty.

I could probably wax philosophical about fridges all day but damn it, I think your fridge says more about you then most things. I have been meaning to do a post of What’s In Your Fridge for a while now. I plan on doing a What’s In Your Fridge post every season, to see how our diet changes!

There’s a photographer, Mark Menijar, who spent years photographing peoples fridges as a kind of self portrait and I think it’s bloody fascinating.

Here’s a link to an article in the Daily Mail UK.

And another article on Slate.com, with “Then & Now” pictures. So cool.

So here is my fridge, and what’s in it..

Keep in mind that its grocery day, so its abnormally full. Also keep in mind, that we have a very small budget, there’s a very small selection of vegetables available on the island in the winter, and CB is a giant. We try to buy exactly enough for the week, and REALLY try to eat absolutely everything before the next round of groceries. Except in the case of that sweet potato.. that one is vintage.

It usually looks just like this, because we buy pretty much the same things every week. All thats missing is bacon because it wasnt on sale, and a giant 4kg chub of BALOGNE, because we are trying harder not to die early now…
